Hi all,

I need some help. Picking up a 8x2x2 240g next week first of all. And only last week did I find an LFS in Melbourne that has a breeding Dovii pair (eggs about to hatch) and also small baby Jaguars. These were the two fish on my list that I had no access to. If I list my preferred stock below, I'd like some feedback whether you guys think that the combo would work, or if I would have to remove certain fish from my list, as it's asking for trouble.

All would be sourced at under 2" and grown out in the 240g together. Would this be a case of being fine for maybe the first year and then when certain fish reach maturity, all hell break loose? Or does it have a good possibility of success? I'm in it for the long haul, and would like to house them well for their lifespan. Don't know how much bigger in tanksize I can go mind you.

Thanks in advance

1.Male Dovii. 2. Male Jaguar. 3. Male Butti 4. Male or Female Festae 5. Red Devil. 6.Salvini. 7 I can get Cuban's here but can't get Odo's unfortunately, but I think the list is full enough as it is.....:screwy:

I currently have a 20g with 3 x 1" Female Convicts and 1 x 2" Blue Acara that will probably have to stay there.

Sorry for the long post...

There are also a batch of 1" Umbee's at another LFS, but I may be getting a little silly now, not sure. Don't know if a 240 is enough for him on his own...

Dovii dont usually make good community fish, but im sure you already know that. When small everything will work out but like you said, once they reach maturity who knows what could happen. Odds are good that the dovii will be solo in there lol.

Hi mate.

Yeah i'd be a bit iffy about the dovii. They do grow a lot bigger than your other cichlids, and are a hell of lot more aggro.

The rest could work but, as central american guapotes go, you may be inviting a bloodbath. I'd go for it but your eyes better be peeled on that tank, make sure nothings going wrong. I'd be getting rid of all females, all males there is no competition for mates so the risk of injury is just that little bit less.

yea im like 60% to 99% sure that u will only have 1 fish in that tank if u get the dovii. they can get pretty big for most cichlids i have noticed and about 90% of the time i have had them they are way more aggressive. I know im gona get crap for this but a few of mine i noticed seems like they in joy killing other fish around the same size or bigger. i know ur all are gona say its cuz they have there own territory but i had medium size pond that had places for both of them to hide. the thing is that almost right after i put my 16 inch jag with my 19 inch dovii he killed it never stoped biteing it he just got a good hold of the head and crush i tryed to help the jag but it was no good. thats wat happens when u own a dovii.

It may it may not try it i want to do the same thing as soon as i move out next year. A piece of edvice you are getting younger fish so thats a good start but id get a festa that is double the size of the rest as they grow much slower and the others would catch up and get the dovi and umbiee at least half the size of the other fish.

Make enought hiding holes as for 1 for each fish as well. and speading decore around so there is no long sight of view so the more domiant fish can not contuiesly see the other fish.

Also add on to the post above, make sure there are about 3 hiding places for each fish, selections.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've always wanted a Dovii, I sort of knew it would maybe have to live alone. Would just love to have all my favs in a community tank. Why do I have to like the all the unsociable Central Americans.... It will be interesting enough I suppose.

Mate is you want to risk it go for it.

It could work but the odds are against you. Also how at 2 inch are you gonna make sure to get males? You could try it, but i'd be VERY careful with other parachromis. (i.e. Jaguar Cichlid).

Dovii are awesome fish, why not a breeding pair? Then you could see friendly interactions (as friendly as doviis go that is :grinyes:) between the pair as long as the male isn't excessively sex hungry.

If you like big Central American Guapotes that aren't very aggressive, you can't go past baysnooks. Absoulute pussys but big and grim looking, and plus you can keep them with other (not too much smaller) Central American fishes. I even saw a pair in with a Jardini, so they can hold their own, but not against other CA cichlids. Their mouth is not the robust type that is dovii, theirs are the bucket mouths thin flimsy material easyly broken/ripped by other big cichlids.

Hope I helped. :)

it might work if you go 1-2males & the rest females. But looking at your list looks like you only want "males" goodluck tho!
