Very interesting fish selection! They all look great!

Thanks, I have a no expense spared approach, I'll pay the$ for good quality fish and don't scrimp on the filtration...on Tuesday in going to drop another $800 into another 2260 and 10l marine pure 1.5 inch spheres!

Ultimately, when the fish grow bigger I will reduce the numbers, as the size of the fish will give the same over stocking effect that the smaller fish do with larger numbers. Probably looking to end up with 7maybe 8 35cm + fish...

My pick would be, the fen, jag, gt, flowerhorn, female festea (in growout tank), freidrishstalli (in growout tank) and a zonatus (but got that yet lol), black nasty (not got yet)

Message to people in this thread, there have been a few dumb asses jump I'm here and mention that I have had a cycle issue..let's discuss that:

1: this tank was set up and running BEFORE my cycle crashed and the stats were 0,0,0

2: my cycle crashed because my wife refilled my rainwater tank with town water and forgot to tell me,I then did a 70-80% water change with no prime.

3: cycle is slowly restarting.

4: terracotta does denitrify, I find that typically one large 3-4kg piece reduced nitrate by 5ppm

Lastly to the people who pounded this thread,I could understand you criticizing me if I had actually done something incorrectly, but your telling me in a bad fish keeper because my wife erroneously filled the tank with town water...how was she to know there was a difference she has zero interest in the fish...(be very careful before you entertain the idea of insulting towards my wife)

Water is water to her, the tank ran dry, she got it refilled and didn't say anything, why would she?

I did my water change with no prime as usual and bang...cycle collapsed, chlorine sterilized my bio media.

The world goes on, I will fix the cycle with the fish in the tank some how, and in future my wife will tell me if she emptied the tank and gets it refilled....

If I'm honest I think bderick67 who posted is just trolling, he has been hassling in the past and I think he saw an opportunity to be a troll and took it....enjoy life!

If your going to try and make a fool of someone get the facts straight first...

Whoa, take it easy there killer. NOBODY insulted the wife, and while some people on forums tend to stoop pretty low, I've never seen anybody on MFK go that low. Relax.
You have a nice looking group of fish. If you had a crash, no biggie. Don't stress it dude, people are still enjoying the pics of your setup and fish. Your Fen is 2years old and looks good so that says something. How come you opted to go with no gravel? Just to keep any sediment from being stirred up? That would make sense and its something I've considered doing in my large cichlid tank as well, but just can't get all the way there.
One thing I don't understand is how the terra cotta removes nitrAtes. I understand the nitrifying process and could see its effectiveness on nitrites but not nitrates. I always thought te only way to remove nitrates is by biological consumption via plants or mechanical removal via water changes.

I do accept the fact that what I have done is outside the norm and pushes boundaries but end of the day it is working for me!

Oh, nah man, I just meant I thought they was "powerful" but not necessarily aggressive. Aggression and fighting ability is different than being powerful. I also know an adult oscar can not typically overpower an adult dovii or be more powerful than an adult dovii. :) You are fine, your opinion just interested me. ;)

Tank crash and all. No thanks. That is NOT the definition of "working" to me. Terra cotta pots to control nitrate? Umm.... I am a Hillbilly, but I've never crashed a tank or told folks pots control nitrates. If that where the case, every Cichlid breeder on earth would have no nitrates because we all use these pots.

Good luck while it lasts, because it won't.

I opted for no substrate for increased tank area, while it will harbor a lot of bacteria I thought that more flow was important.

If you check a few posts above I explained why terracotta denitrifies.

Plants are also a good way to do this but I have a tank hood and don't want plants sticking out the top lol

another hillbilly! Irrespective of what you think/know this works.my question in other threads was how do I kick the cycle off with my fish in the tank.

Most breeders have half a terracotta pot,I'm using a a kg to liters ratio.
