AGGRESSIVE CICHLID TANK WITH NO AGGRESSION

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, did you read why my tank crashed? I'm in rainwater, my wife ran the tank dry and had the water board refill it with town water, didn't tell me,I did a 70-80% water change with no prime and had my filters running.

I only noticed something was wrong when my moving bed, within 15 mins changed from dark brown to polished white media.

I Started freaking out then.she told me it was town water.

That would most definitely break your cycle....washing your entire bio system with chlorine and chloramine for 15-20 mins....

And this illustrates my point. Lots of us have had similar things happen at one time or another. This is one of the main reasons "overstocked" tanks are dangerous IMO. My wife has done exactly the same thing by forgetting dechlorinator in our 300. The only reason it didn't crash was because of the lighter stocking and enormous bio filter. The tank barely skipped a beat.

A crash is a crash no matter who's to blame. Accidents happen, but when you push the limits, you risk certain things and this is one of my main concerns with running tanks like this. Almost like accidents waiting to happen.

Best of luck with yours though either way and like I said, to each his own.

This Hillbilly's checking out. Got some beer drinking to do.....🍺🍻

I dint blame her, she knows nothing about fish, fact is I thought I had rain water but it was chlorinated crap, and a 70% change wrecked the bio!

Strangely enough I just did a water tests and I got, ammonia 0.25 ppm, nitrite 20ppm, nitrate 5ppm..

I never used prime or dechlorinator when I did it. Just a bit of aquarium salt. I had 7 jags, 1 red devil, 2 oscars, a green terror and 2 bichirs and 4 large plecos. All fish range from 7" - 15". I have since sold some as I am changing my stock around.

Think your talking a slight but of rubbish there, unless the water did not contain chlorine or chloramine

Actually your sounding like drama queen. Ive forgotten prime countless times. No harm. It crashed because you're under filtering an overstocked tank. Lol.

It's not rocket science , the fish look good, so props. But the truth is if you used standard Pfs or a gravel bed, with just two, three fish, you'd be fine. Just like the rest of us are. But you lacking surfaces for your bb and like 50% less turn over then you need for what you're trying to do.

False. If I didn't treat my water, it would crash everything.....regardless of my stocking level.

If you've not treated your water before and didn't have a crash, you are at least one of the following:
1). Lucky
2). Didn't do a very large water change
3). Your water supply doesn't have a very high concentration of chlorine/chloramine

Your statement is just plain ignorant.

His statement is not ignorant. He is saying the same thing as me. You are the ignorant fool who cannot take input or advice from anyone. I don't even know why you went on about your issues cause every time someone offers you advice you take offence. I have been doing this a long time and know what I am doing. If you can't take input then don't start threads.

Hmmm...I didn't start this thread. Try reading man. And I don't need advise and didn't ask for any. I've been up and running for a very long time, and have no issues.....been on here a long time, and have a lot of experience.

My statement stands. Not dosing for chlorine/chloramine in and of itself can result in a crash. Regardless of bb colony, stocking levels, or anything else. To just put a blanket statement saying it can't is ignorant. We don't know how much chlorine/chloramine is in the ops water supply...so to just put a blanket statement like that is just ignorance. I know in my case, it would cause a crash, and my tank is very established and under stocked.

This....^

He didn't say he was ignorant. He said his statement was. I agree though. Blanket statements like this just don't make sense to make. I also agree with the 3 reasons he gave that made it possible to get away with it.
