My Red Devil is now officially the tank bully. He has made his home in on the left side of the tank. I had tried to make a hideout for my pike out of some african root wood, but he took over, dug out the gravel to the glass bottom, and guards this area fiercely. The only problem is that he wont let the other 2 fish have their space. He swims back and forth chasing the other fish from the other structures in the tank. :swear: i have a rock cave a fake tree root and I am preparing some more root wood for the other side. I am hoping to keep all my fish safe until I get their new 90gal home ready.

Any suggestions.

inhabitants are:

1 red devil approx 8"
1 Jack Dempsey approx 6"
1 Orange Pike approx 10"
2 blood parrots .

What size tank are they in now? RD's are known for being big bullies.. You should get a divider until your new tank is ready.

An 8 inch devil in a tank smaller than 90 gallons will not likely accept tank mates. I would try to speed up that 90 and it may become a problem in there too

Uhhh...duh? Its a Red Devil...not exactly notorious for their peacekeeping skills.

I hope you're aware that even in a 90gal tank, an 8" RD is highly likely going to take over the entire tank anyway. Its very unlikely that you'll be able to keep tankmates with him at all in that tank, and once he gets bigger he'll definitely need the whole thing to himself.

Your best bet is to increase your surface area, instead of a 48X18, try to go to a 60x18, or better yet 72x18 or 72x24.....Deep or shallow won't make much of a difference....

the best thing to do in the meantime would probably be to try to keep rearranging the tank decor as the red devil landscapes and tries to make it his own. this will keep him busy trying to recreate what you change. and since you'll be redefining his established territory he'll be less likely to get aggressive with the other fish. funny, mine is about 8 inches and i have him with a 4 inch pike and a 6 inch pleco and he could truly care less about them. all he wants to do is move gravel around day and night (when he's not eating).
