Hi and thanks in advance for all advice
i get a bad red slime algae cyanobacteria bloom whenever i turn the light in the tank on.

Setup:
- 40 gallon bow front
- Fluval 405 (its a 4 stage i think. i have the appropriate filter media on each level. Metal sponge, these white cylinder looking tubes, and another type of media is in there)
- I have a Protein Skimmer (i forget brand.. but it was a pretty decent one)
and crushed coral substrate.
- I forget the weight but i have the appropriate amount of live rock in the tank (if all put together, its a bit bigger than a basket ball)
- I ONLY use Reverse Osmosis water out of my own 4 stage system.
- I have the readings at home, but i think all the water tests have been fine each time. (ammonia, ph, oxygen, nitrate, nitrite etc..)

the tank has been running for 7 months or so now.
If i leave the light on for longer than 4 hours i get what i think is a red slime algae bloom. but its only when the light comes on. it NEVER happened before until my wife and i went away to the beach and the light was left on over night once.. and we came back and it was COVERED head to toe. only thing i could do was turn off the light and cover with a blanket. slowly, it all died and got sucked away.

i have 3 damsel fish, a lettuce slug, a small crab, and a feather duster in the tank. for MOST of the 7 months its been running ive just had the 3 damsel fish.

can anyone see what im doing wrong? i want to get to the next level where i can actually start getting some cool things and building on my tank, but this bloom of whatever it is cant be good.
im not sure what i did wrong, or if it was inherited from the last owner (i properly cleaned every inch of everything i got with hot water and distilled vinegar)
could the light he gave me be not correct for the tank?

once again thanks for any advice.
really wanna get this tank going.

:welcome: to MFK!

I moved your thread here in General Salt. Hope you will be to find answers here towards your issues. Good luck.:)

1). Test your Phosphates.
2). Get phosphate remover.
3). a Blackout may be in order since you don't have any demanding corals. 2-3 days does it usually. Do step 1 and 2 before this. Some people like it, some people hate it. I've done it before and see no problem with it as long as you have no corals.

Cyanobacteria should be gone. Be sure to remove the phosphate remover after awhile because it will release the phosphates back into the water eventually.

i thought the last time i tested my phosphate levels were good..

im getting off early today and im gonna go home and do a full range of all the tests i have and post my results.
i tried again yesterday.

i turn on the light for the tank, wait a few hours and when i check back the red slime algae starts growing on the bottom.

if my tests all come back within range, i guess id have to look for some way to remove whatever is laying dormat.. as obviously no light = no slime algae.. and when i turn on the light it feeds it.

ill be back to post in a few hours.

sounds like your phosphates are too high? what kind of flow do you have in there any dead spots that detritus or food accumulate in? What is your feeding ritual and what are you feeding?

true ^ But it will only be a quick fix to solve the issue go to the root of the problem or buy red slime remover every few week's for $10.00+ a pop for it.

Hmm.. so i should buy the Dr. G's red slime remover?
also, my friend was saying that just let it go its course and then disrupt the growth when it occurs, scoop out the debris.

should i do the remover as you suggested every few weeks, and disrupt/scoop out the slime?

Our pet store has ordered up a really cool marroon banded starfish for our tank. is the red slime remover safe for aqua life?
