wow thats a cool planted tank and xr when you say planted properly do you mean like attached to driftwood or in a pot or something like that?

yeah, just make sure it is attached to something securly< sp)

My Jack Dempsy was pretty aggressive. It was raised by itself for a few months and then when I moved him to a bigger tank with some tank mates...he didn't like his tank mates. He picked on the Oscar and Clown Knife. When I added a Jag...things changed. He became the second most timid fish in the tank next to the Clown Knife which the Jag killed shortly after. I ended up giving the Jack Dempsy away because EVERYONE started picking on him at this point.

sucks about the clown knife thare great fish mine would be put in with the tank mates hed spend his life with so if thers no problems then hopefully itll work for a while one last question do thay need a cave to hide in when young or when its an adult

It's funny how a new tank or environment will affect a fish's behavior or level of aggressiveness. I've only owed one JD and he was more defensive than aggressive. Mostly he hid all the time and protected his little territory.

Every JD we have ever owned we gave away (4) becasue they were such big sissies and were getting picked on by other fish half their size. So I haven't really bought into the idea that they are aggressive.

ok well that sounds good i just went out and bought one so hopefully he wont get to mean

I had two. The larger one I gave away because of aggression, he took over the whole tank(55).The smaller one is not aggressive at all. One night I put in some minnows to feed. The next morning they were all still there, clustered around the JD for protection. It just depends on the individual.
