Agression in Cuban Cichlids (nandopsis tetracanthus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one more question to experts If in future i want to breed them after transferring them in a bigger tank which other pair of fish can i add in the tank along with this pair for a distraction and simultaneous breeding. Thanks

When mine spawned, they were in a 125gal, and started to kill all others that came near during the end of courtship. So I divided the tank giving the pair 50%, and kept it in until fry were removed.
At about 1" the larger fry started killing the other smaller fry in that tank. I had to separate by size, they ended up spread out all over the fish room.

Though I started with hundreds, I ended up with probably 50 after the larger took out all the smallest

ohh ok so this means that i should just shift them in a bigger tank with no mates along with and give the female a lot of hiding spaces and than see the reaction of the male am i correct ?

Tank mates that are on the other side of the divider are not a bad way to cement the pair bond of the brewing pair. The male can see them, and hopefully vent the aggression caused by spawning hormones.
I kept a divided tank before spawning, but removed the tank mates when fry began to disburse around the tank.
And depending on how aggressive the male gets, remove him with many spawning cichlids if he gets to be a problem. Not just with tetracanthus, but most cichlids.

thanks for this informative reply this is really helpful to novice breeders like me and can you pls name some cichlids which can be housed on the divided side of my cuban pair

Just about any cichlids would work, as long as they are not so large that they intimidate the pair into eating their own fry.
Something along the convict line are usually easily had, but not intimidating.
