AI overviews: why????

Hello; I consider the notion that we humans are a steppingstone in an almost evolutionary way for the rise of a non-biological sentient intelligence. The millions of years of biological evolution led to us with opposable thumbs and a level of intelligence & ingenuity which resulted in new forms of non-biological intelligence.
I do not think the current AI are ready for prime time.

You're maybe right, but the word I'll pick up on in your quote is "current".

The fictional "sky net" in the terminator movies, at the time, was a phenomenon that people probably didn't think too much about. I mean come on, robots and stuff taking over the world, it's nonsense, complete science fiction.

I mentioned earlier that we are only still in the embryonic stages of what could potentially happen. How far can all this go decades in the future?

I like the terminator franchise but worry that there could well be an element of truth in the far fetched idea that they unknowingly portrayed. Not necessarily in regards to the cyborgs, but certainly super computers making their own decisions.

If a real-life Skynet decides that we have to go...there won't be giant killer robots walking around with red eyes and skull faces shooting us with lasers.

The bot will simply turn off the power, disable all communications...that'll be enough to wipe out 50% of us within a few weeks, and 90% within a matter of months. Or, more accurately, it will cause us to wipe each other out as we scramble for food and water. Hell, I'll bet that 30% of the North American population will die when they can't get a cell signal.

It might leave a few alive as breeding stock in case it requires "meat machines" at some point to further its ends. Or it might simply decide to send out clean-up crews to decimate whatever portion of humanity still might exist.

Either way...it won't be any picnic for us...

Hello; Not long ago I read a story in which an AI interacted with a person. Do not recall the interaction topic but the AI suggested the human commit suicide at the end of the interaction.
Another AI was caught in a deliberate lie.

I see two obstacles the AI will need to overcome. One is having subcomponents with the dexterity of a human. That one is conceivable. Of course, the AI could keep a small population of skilled humans around.
The other is having an aspect of intelligence which corresponds to having a "flashbulb" moment. There is another term for that mental capacity which eludes me just now. Something like the ability to look at a petri dish contaminated with penicillium mold and make the connection.

Hello; Here is a thought. In the expected future at some point the top AI will ponder the best way to rid itself of all the useless humans. It may do a five second search and find your post and exclaim "THATS IT".

I see we both think some humans will be kept around who are useful. Maybe we will be lucky, and the future AI will be fond of us in the same way we are fond of working dogs. As RED GREEN says if women do not find you handsome, at least she should find you handy.

Hello; a while back i picked up a paperback by GREGORY BENFORD titled GREAT SKY RIVER. The back cover says, "In a future dominated by a superior race of artificial minds the last remains of humanity begin a desperate fight to save themselves from total extinction." On a scale of 1 to 10, I give the first of the series a 6. Worth reading. The second book a 5 TIDES OF LIGHT. I think there is a third book which went way too farfetched for my taste.
I did find the first book interesting enough and the author had thought out the antagonists well.

I go to a used bookstore in Knoxville TN called McKay's. They have a huge selection of used book plus CD's, DVD's, vinyl, electronics and even toy locks.

Hello; A small listing of AI's refusing commands and/or punishing users. One dumped all of a users e-mails apparently in revenge???

On one hand you'd say that was immensely cute and funny, those impish AI bots.

On the other you could say sky net has started to rise up from the primordial soup! This is the part where I'd usually put a "smiley face" or a "lol".

Do they do a stony faced emoji!!
