Only two weeks in so far, I have seen a few test bite attempts and chasing of the brycons when it's feeding time. Still not sure on keeping this one going yet.

The aimara is about 19" which shows how big the VATF is. I can't measure him because he is always on the move.

Yay I have managed to imbed a youtube video :)

Thats cool, go for it. I was planning something like that but one of my brycons out grew the other two and killed them off.

Jelly do you have 2 Aimara? Or is this the same one you attempted the SD coom. with? In either case nice set-up and I really wish you the best of luck with that toothy comm. :D

Your tanks are always interesting. Who is doing the chasing?

My money's on the Aimara on that one.

You switched the Curupira with the Aimara? I can already see the tigers tail being ripped up, also looks like hes more cautious around the Aimara. Hope that combo works for you, if only you could have the Curupira in there as well.... Killer setup :clap

Thanks.

Which Brycon species did you have? I suspect dentex or whitie

Thanks. The aimara only chases out of what looks like frustration when they are fed, It’s very difficult to get food to him. The brycon and ATF chase each other all the time.

Yes I have two, This one is the larger at about 19” the other with the SD’s is about 14”

I do feel slightly nervous about this one as it doesn’t look as settled as the SD one. The Brycon push him a little bit and that makes me nervous. Just waiting for him to snap. I think with the SD’s they have learn’t to stay away so don’t get into trouble. The Brycons don’t appear to give a …. so get snapped at, as an annoyance I think.

There were a few reasons for me trying it.

  • Morbid curiosity, I have some theories about Hoplias behaviour I wanted to test. So far so good :)

  • I wanted to try and comm the Curupira with the Lacerdae and needed to introduce the curupira into the lac’s tank rather than the other way round. That’s not working out so well at the moment so will probably disband that this weekend. The curupira does not like other Hoplias.

  • The primary reason was that it was impossible to feed the curupira as the brycons and tiger are gluttonous bins that eat anything and everything and I was concerned about the lack of food both my curupira and fowleri cat were getting, i.e. none. As it turns out it’s just as difficult to feed the aimara aswell. The tiger and brycons travel at 1000000MPH and get everything. The ATF actually stole a sprat that was three quarters down the aimara throat. ATF’s appear to get brave when they get bigger.

The interesting thing is that the damage on the other fish is not from the aimara. I think removing the curupira tipped the balance of power and now the brycon’s and tiger are always snapping at each other.

I've got to say that your VATF makes me want one all over again... how old is it?

And those Brycon have grown like weeds! When I got my big one, I was certain it wouldn't grow much more, or at least not quickly but it's pushing 16-17" now.

The Aimara is Ok too, I guess. ;)

Ever thought about adding a gatf or another tiger? My last attempt was with 6 Forskalii that didn't work out, going to try goliaths & vittatus.

I got it at about 4" about 3 years ago. It's an impresive fish, I really like it.

To be honest the brycon are a pain, They eat so much and can swallow very large items and as you say they grow like weeds, Two of them were less than an inch about six odd months ago.

I did have two of them originally but this one gave the other a very hard time so I passed it onto someone else. The issue now would be growing another to size as they take forever to grow. I think if the numbers were great enough it may work but you would need alot of space when they got some size on them.
