Aimara eye damaged by dorado..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am truly amazed at how quick he is recovering. Take a look, the white has almost subsided although still swollen. Have him divided with the bichers only. Now he dorado and Mala share the other side.
DB junkie DB junkie the brassies here when specifically labelled is maybe 200 usd but occasionally can pick a few out of a batch of Frankie's which are very cheap.

That mala looks like an australis with the underbite...

Lovely fishes there - the Mala has nice finnage. That brassie is a great catch. Unless they are easy to get at your place, I would hang on to it - despite its difficult temperament.

Those "non herringbone" markings do make this different from normal Mala - I am no expert here though.

Different Hoplias species are one of the more commonly mixed up scenario one can find in LFS.

Possibly due to a couple types of them can be caught in the same source.

Perhaps those experience keepers can let us know so that we can have some fun sorting out the contaminants whenever a batch of wolves becomes available. :)

Interesting indeed, here in china they call these tiger band / stripe wolf which is a little different than the common Mala which is translated as a type of wood wolf lol. About a year ago, I threw one of these that was actually larger and a trouble maker into my outdoor pond. That wolf kept getting harassed by my red Arowana but ultimately I think during late night, the wolf went for the underbelly of the arowana which made the arowana jump with all his might. Ended up breaking open the canopy and past away... very expensive lesson. But as punishment I threw that wolf (40cm) into the pond where I had 3 channa micropeltes around 60cm and 3 alligator gars around 75cm reside. I tried looking for the wolf after I did a major drain and clean and there was no body to be found.. Probably got eaten by the channas.. Maybe if I knew it might have been an australis, perhaps I wouldn't have thrown it in the pond.. Oh well.

LOL! Poor wolf. :)

Is there any of these "wood wolf" still available? Maybe you can go grab one and make an ID thread here. Hahaha.

If not mistaken, I read one of the threads here Lacerdae, Mala and other type of wolf are caught from the same source in SA.

It would be a dream come true for a hobbyist to get one from a batch of Mala anywhere.

How available are these wood wolves by the way? Just curious. Since they have been identified and called this. Not too many people look for these particular wolves and are a contaminant when trying to get Malas.

The fish does look Australis. Head shape and spotting suggests not mala. But there is so much variation. No way to fully now w/o jaw shots out of the water and pore counts. Use this all to figure out what it is and isn't.

Fish are seasonal so to say from what I can gather. I see more aimaras right now than any other Wolves actually. ill look into this a bit more and see how the pores look. Not sure if I will net out to check though.
