aiptaisa anemone?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a real outbreak of these guys in my seahorse system. And as far as I know..they can sting.

Anyway..they were taking over the live rock in all my tanks.
But I also have the luxury of having no corals. I know a lot of you guys keep soft-coral reef tanks. I keep only species specific tanks
Anyway...when I was tearing down a sysytem....
I put all my live rock from all the tanks in a 75, drained half the water , and added fresh water to fill it up. Dropping the salinity in half.
I let it go like that for a day or two.

Thye were all gone ( so far) its been a couple weeks.
All my live rock is back in the original tanks...but I havent seen any yet.

butterfly fish will take care of them in a larger fowlr tank. u have to be careful with them in a reef tank. they can nip corals.

i still have a few hanging around in my tank. i zap 1 at a time with joes juice. im adding 2 peppermint shrimp to see if they will help control them.

My peppermint shrimp mutilated the aiptasia in my tank at first, but now they are sort of getting lazy.

Yea, it is also hit or miss with them eating aiptasia as well. I lost one of my peppermint shrimp during the tank transfer, and he may have been the only one eating them. There is also the issue with them not being comfortable at all in their new tank. It took mine about a month or so when I put them in my 55, before they would come out.

Peppermint shrimp eat aptasia if you get the right ones... there are other species that are very close that dont. That being said I wouldnt recommend copperbandeds because they have a nasty little habit of going on food strike after they are done with the anemones, and they are also not able to get as many as the peppermints are with their smaller size.
