air bubbler in the tank neccasary for oxygen??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't use one on any of my tanks and my fish are fine. As long as your tank has good water circulation. Water movement at the surface helps oxygenate quite a bit.

As long as you have adequate surface agitation you are OK without one.
The rising bubbles do very little for gas exchange on their own. What they do is create water movement to agitate the surface. This is where gas exchange occurs.

I don't use any air on my tanks and never have......

the bubbles themselves provide nothing more than aesthetics.

It is all down to surface area. Have your filter outlet pointed at the water surface for agitation. I think bubbles are in the same league as treasure chest... tacky :barf:

As long as your filter is breaking the water surface then there not needed. Only time I can see one need is when you raise the temp to treat a fish for like ich for example.

Yeah but it does help with oxygen because when I took my B B out of my african tank one time, not even within 24 hours they all were at the top trying to get more O2 so it does just do more than decorate, it has some advantages for a healthier fish

All that means is that you didn't have enough of surface agitation when the airstone was off.
