I notice a lot of aro tanks have air stones i haven't used one since the 80s . Is that something aros love or is it just a water movement thing always used power heads for that.

jconley;772988; said:If you think about it, air stones aren't really THAT efficient for oxygenation. All the bubbles are going to the surface and releasing above the water. Powerheads with venturies or even the waterfall action of a power filter are far more efficient. Don't get me wrong, bubbles DO break surface tension, an action which provides oxygen, but mostly people just like the look of a curtain of bubbles.![]()
IITUFFTOBEATII;773055; said:Air stones are the most efficient way to oxygenate water PERIOD. Its got nothing to do with breaking the surface, each bubble has its own surface area which gas transfer takes place across. For those that use a wet/dry the surface area is increased by the water dripping or pouring through the media. One or the other is sufficient as you can never exceed the saturation levels for a given temp or pressure, At standard temperature and pressure (20 degrees C, and 1 atm) that level is around 8.5 mg/l dissolved oxygen
If you have any doubts call your local waste water treatment plant and ask them how they oxygenate water.
