Just a question to see if anyone has any guidelines that they follow when filtering their tanks with sponge filters such as LPM or CFM per sponge. I'm not sure if I have ever seen this addressed here.

So just list out what you are running in this format.

Air Pump Model:
LPM or CFM:
Sponge Brand:
Sponge rating (gal)/:
Number of sponges:

If your sponge is home made, give us some dimensions and specs.

BUMP

2 Azoo Battery Backup Aquarium Pumps
2 Jemco Hydro-Sponge Pro #5 (4”h x 5 3/4” dia. coarse sponge)

Not sure what the sponge is rated for but here's what i found on the pump..
The Azoo Battery Backup Pump prevents that by providing 10 to 20 hours of backup airflow for you aquarium. It switches automatically the instant it detects power loss, and starts pumping air into the aquarium. It's rated at an output of 240 liters per hour, and is perfect for aquariums up to 80 gallons.

So it is running about 4 LPM, which really isn't bad for a battery backup. Based on the above link, Hydro/Hydor sponges only need about 1.42 LPM to operate.

Yea 4LPM, I bought them more for the battery backup than anything.. I know it's not the ideal backup but it works until i get the cash for a generator.. Figured better than nuthing..lol

I've got one of those 13002 models from Azoo. I have powered it with a Whisper 40 (No idea on CFM) and it moved a lot of air up the tube. I have also powered it with a small $5 "Elite" air pump from Petsmart and it moved maybe 10-20% as much air up the tube.

Not sure if this info helps at all but I thought I'd share.

Hope no one minds but I have a question as well.

What is the maintenance interval for the average sponge filter?

I have never used one in 20+ years of fish keeping. LOL
I have allways just made internal box filters out of plastic bottles, plastic peanut butter jars, old tuberware, etc with a bubble tube out the top and intake holes around it. And used floss as filter media with some bio media under it. And I usually wash the media when it looks dirty or every 4-6months in filters i can't see thru.

Thanks

Really, I think it depends on the size of the filter and the load of the tank, but I generally rinsed them in tank water every couple of weeks in an alternating fashion.
