air pumps are mainly for decoration only or used to drive bubble powered ornaments.

with normal filtration, they are not needed for dissolved oxygen.

I agree. i only have an air pump on my tropical tank which pumps my 4ft bubble curtain. For visual effects only. It's a $10 air pump from Wal-mart and has 2 air outlets. cheap and does the job very well. Powerful enough to create a full curtain all the way across the 4ft tank. i have no air on my 120g and will have no air on the 180 I'm getting this weekend.

Not necessarily true. Air pumps are also good for stabilizing water chemistry. By placing air stones in your tank, you can force off CO2 and raise kH. Increased kH can bring pH to a level closer to neutral and help stabilize that level. Also, as Midnight mentioned, air stones can help circulate water and move debris to be picked up by your filtration.

the one neo has i looked into.... might reconsider that in the future but i have a dual diaphram hydro farm pump(4 outlets) and i use the biggest dual outlet whisper ones...(forgot there model number)

I think i have the same whisper you have its like a DW700 or something like that. Its the deep water series it says it's for like 8ft deep water. I run two 24" bubble wands and two hydro IV sponge filters off of it. With the help of two gang valves. I like it and all but I don't like the gang valves I have I need to go get better quality ones I am pretty sure I have leaks in both of them b/c they are cheep plastic. But the pump works GREAT and isn't that loud at all I have it sitting on a small pillow and the FX5 thats on that tank too is alot louder then the pump.

Hey Neo aren't those BIG pumps called huffers? and are rated in like 1/4HP and up?

Cool info guys.

Neo your air pump is insane!

My filtration and aeration is suffice at the moment and all my tanks are lightly stocked.

But more aeration and more aeration can only be a good thing.

Also I have some fish that seem to love getting up in the air flow and I love watching them tumble!

Now it's time to search the net for the good prices.

Thanks again guys

How does the air move through the kinked connections..won't that back pressure shorten the pumps life?

I don't use air in my big tanks, but I do use sponge filters in my basement breeding setup. I use a Coralife Super Luft Pump. They come with a 6-outlet plastic valve, but, depending on how many tanks I've got running, I will further split the lines with a gang valve going to multiple tanks.

The price is good, and mine has been super reliable.
