but more is better, water quality is good with 2 ac 100's and a fluval 304, but never hurts to over filter, the only residents are 2 10-12" oscars and i pleco, in theory, would this work, or would it be a waste of time?

If you are trying to make a sponge filter inside your AC, I think it's not worth your time. Just buy a sponge filter, they are cheap anyway.

I think the increased bio capacity would be negated by the loss of mech, due to constant dislodging, and keeping particles in the water column...I agree with Wurm, just go get a sponge and blam, you are set.

dont need another filter, just thinkin of different ways to maximize what i have, what if you simply lay some air stones on top of the sponge directly underneath the biological media, would doin it this way accomplish anything? stirring up the mechanical makes sense to not do it that way.

Every time you rinse out the sponge, the majority of the bio bacteria is gone. The sponge is meant for mech filtration.

i know that, never said i was going to rinse the sponge, just curious as to the benefit or lack therof of placing the aire stones on top of the filter, therefor the air would not go throught the sponge, and only effect the bio

The short answer is "not worth your time"....That same air stone can be used in a way that can be beneficial to your system...Great idea, and with maybe an AC full of less porous bio media (such as pot scrubbies) would be more applicable, but still I think add a sponge or leave it be...

so what would be a better way of using the air stones in an aquarium, i already have 48 inches of the bubble strip stuff in one tank, and large round air stones in the other?

Put it inside a sponge filter. You get filtration and aeration, double win.
