Airpump help

I was wondering that air pumps aren't gonna work in fully filled fish tanks since they get oxygen in the air by aggitating the surface, correct?

i have an acrylic tank that is fully covered, except for the 2 big holes in the middle and 2 lits in the back(like any other acrylic i'm thinking)

but how many inches of space should i leave between the waterline and the top of the tank?

also how do you use check valvues? mine didn't come with any instructions(i guess it's really easy then) but there's this one side that has a bigger point and on the other, a smaller point. which goes to the tubing and which to the pump?
 
how do air pumps work anyway?

do they suck in the air from outside and then just push that into the water?
so do i have to put the air pump in a clean area without dust, etc.? as not to suck up all the bad stuff and release into the tank
 
Air pumps work by drawing air in from outside and then forcing it into the tank usually through a diffuser that creates bubbles within the tank, which adds oxygen. I keep my air pump inside my tank stand.

As with any tank I'd fill it to within 1 to 2 inches from the top.

check valves only allow water to flow one way through, there should be an arrow on it indicating which way it will allow water to pass. The arrow should point up and away from the discharge side of your pump.
 
thanks; my tank stand kinda smells funny and it seems pretty dusty...where should i put it? on the carpet floor?
 
As basslover34 said clean the stand out and put ithe air pump in there and check where the air is being sucked in from, on mine it is on the bottom so putting it on the carpet would block the hole and check valves are a must to prevent water getting back into the air pump if the power goes out. To find out witch way the checkvalve works just put it in line as close to the top of the tank and if air come out it is in the right way.
