airpump or powerhead?

powerheads with venturi systems... produces a lot more bubbles/oxygen

My old AquaClear powerhead with the venturi at maximum was enough O2 to stunt my plant's growth. Aerating powerheads make plenty of oxygen.

Do you have to have a powerhead or airsotne in your aquarium? I'm setting up a 100 G soon and plan on using a canister filter and planned on putting the out take a little above the water line would that work you think?

what do you think is the best source of oxygenation and why? thanks!

Has anyone here but me taken a moment to explain “why?”… I don’t think so…

Which makes me wonder how many posters here actually know “why” they think their answer is best… and how many are just shouting answers…

The true answer to that question is surface agitation & circulation...

There are dozens of ways to achieve those two things...

Including placing the return of a canister near enough to the surface to cause little ripples across the top, you don’t need to have it actually above the surface creating splashing…

See post # 9 of this thread for a longer explanation…

One could pose a strong argument that planting the tank is also the best, yet having seen this debated at length, although planting does work just fine, I don’t believe it is “the best”…

PS - Opps... Chrislxf explained "why"

if you hookup a air tube on the effluient nozzel, it will do the same job as the air pump. IMO powerhead do a better job in circulating water and areate the tank at the same time. Bear in mind though since powerhead is inside the tank, it will raise water temp due to energy release by the motor.

just my 2 cents.
+1 :)

An easy way to add oxygen to your fish tank is to coil a bubble wall tightly around a power head. The propeller will chop the bubbles into a fine mist and spray them around the tank! Also works well with diy c02.

I have 2 Venturi power heads in my grow out tank for rays and an armatus. It is a 4' tank, 2 overflows and 2 returns equiped with mag 9.5.

My power heads are a rio 600 and an old aquaclear 802, both Venturi. After adding the 802 I'm getting a lot of suspended micro like bubbles.

Are the tiny suspended bubbles bad for the environment as far as the fish are concerned??

I have temporarily unplugged the 802 for now. Until I get any insight from the pros on here:)
