Smallmouth and spotted basses are 2 separate species and to go even further, the Alabama spotted has recently been upgraded to species level...no longer a subspecies of the Kentucky spotted bass. It is now simply called the Alabama bass.

My tank water is at about 75 degrees because of other tankmates and he's already eaten frozen bloodworms.

The area I collected him had a ton of these guys and juvie longears. It's a portion of the Coosa River below Lake Jordan in AL. I used a mask and snorkel to locate them and then netted them. I caught a ton of longears and about a half dozen AL spots but only kept the one because of tank space.
