ALASKAN BLACKFISH ( A NEW BUCKET LIST FISH)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So basically it's a 7 inch killifish ?
They do resemble some of the native killifish that I've caught in the creek.I read up on them a little and yes, they are related to the pikes and muskies.

They do live in super shallow ponds that might gets hot during summer.

These fish are awesome. The only problem I see with them being sold as pets in the US is the usual irresponsible keepers. I'm sure these could live in the northern half of the Mississippi River basin and in places like Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, etc all year. So imagine what happens when people get tired of them or can no longer house them. Just my 2 cents, but correct me if I'm wrong about them living down south a little farther.

I would think that due to their rather remote collection areas a small number of vendors would even bother to acquire them....and very few hobbyists would buy them.

With as hardy as they are, and the ability to breathe atmospheric air, they would be invasive in multiple states within a year or two because you KNOW some guy would order 10 of them, get bored and chuck them in a stream somewhere.

I say all of us PA keepers get on a plane to Siberia and bring this thing into the hobby! We'd probably have less of a chance of being shot at there than if we tried taking them in Alaska haha.
