Albino Catfish dying--please help

He didn't make it. I buried him beside the pond and it took both me and my husband to get him out. But I think I finally know what caused it. I found several lists that mentioned oak leaves and acorns as being toxic to fish. Well, his pond is directly underneath several large oak trees. They had no acorns last year but this year there are thousands of them and it was really, really windy with the weather change over the weekend. As I was trying to get him out of the pond, I noticed there were no acorns in there so I'm thinking he ate them that last warm day and then the temps dropped from 80 to 32 so he couldn't get rid of them before it got cold again. I just wish I'd known so I could have prevented this. I miss my big fish. :(

I want to next spring--after I've made sure the pond is safe for him. I thought the previous owner fully researched ponds and plants before he dug these ponds but I just found out from the neighbor that he was the one that did all the research and this idiot didn't follow his advice at all because he thought his way was better. But the koi are fine and it's getting cold now so this will be a project for spring. And then I have to convince my husband that we want another channel cat!

He tried, but I think the water was just too cold. I could only get it up to 50 degrees. Nobody seems to have pond heaters around here and all I could find was an aquarium heater so I put it right beside him, but it just wasn't strong enough. Bad timing with this unseasonal weather. It never gets this cold this early here, or so I've been told.
