I ended up breaking down and buying "Algae Destroyer".

I added it before going to work and when I came home 10 hours later the water was perfectly clear. I was very surprised it worked as well as it did in just a short time.

I still need to get to the root of my problem.

good news for you - guess chems is surely the way to get quick results.

when I did my major cleaning, I only cleaned one of my AC110 & sponge filter & washed in tank water only, but didn't clean the other filter to preserve the BB.

so far no brown algae/diatom bloom (that was the real nuisance), still get some spots of the cloudy white film on the glass but I just sponge scrub it off now.

Now that you mention it, I used to run a single micro pad in my XP1 but have sense removed as I didn't believe it was doing anything.

I have an AC110 as well, what brand of micro pad do you run that fits well in the ac110?

I forgot what brand it was. I think they have them at most chain stores. Its just a big 2'x2' pad. i cut it to the shape of the tray in my aquaclears and then i just insert it below all of my inserts.

The first time i used it when i had an algae bloom. it was all cleared up the next morning. i checked the micron filter pad and it was completely green. i like that alot better than using the chemicals
