I have had an alage bloom that i have been trying to get rid of for about two weeks. I have a 36 gallon tropical semi aggressive tank that is very understocked with only 6 tetras and 3 dwarf grommie. it is moderately planted and i have T5 lighting. I have a UGF hooked up to a 30 gallon powerhead and a 30 gallon air pump. as well as a 50g HOB. I tested with a test kit and have low ammonia low nitrate and nitrite and a ph around 7.2-7.6 i use a liquid test kit. i have carbon and ammo chips in my HOB and a bag od crushed coral in the back of my tank. temp stays at 72-73. whew! i hope that is all the information you need.

Things ive tried:
-changing filter
-water changes (15-25%)
-Light off ( for 7 days)
My friend also told me to turn off my UGF so the algae can "settle" so i tried that for 3 days (should i keep doing this?)

all of these things have helped to clear up my tank and now i can finally see th back of my tank but its still green and i want to completely get rid of it. Im very tired of it. I want to get rid of it without using a UV sterilizer because i cant afford it and i would rater not use chemicals for fear of it harming my plants/fish/snails. i had the same problem with my goldfish tank and it took almost three months for it to get fixed, i do NOT want to wait that long for my 36 gallon to clear up. Im to the point where im about to give up on fish keeping all together because of this algae. please help me PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

You need to get a UV sterilizer. They are quite expensive but you could maybe get one off of an online site, like craigslist, aquabid, kijiji etc.
If you lived in calgary I´d let you borrow mine.

The only other thing I can think of is keep doing what youre doing, as its working.
also try to remove the algae that remains yourself, because if you remove it and take it out of the tank, thats less to deal with for the system.

maybe you could get a grass carp from an lfs that deals pond fish ? they are an asian carp that destroys most kinds of algae. tehy work amazing for algae blooms in ponds.

pond algea killers but take your fish out when you use it. if you have another tank.

How long should i wait before returning my fish to their tank?
would i fill their temporary tank with the water they are in currently so as not to shock them?
Would the current fish i have be ok in a ten gallon tank until the pond algae killer is removed?
Should i move my plants too?
Can you suggest a specific type/brand of algae killer?

I wish you could just rent those things for a couple days from an lfs. how would i remove it myself?
