Algae Destroyer!

i recieved the same type of responses, when i recommended a past product that i used. Its a tank water clarifier that Coralife makes. I was experiencing cloudy water for a few weeks, and my guy recommended i use this. Basically, all it does is clump up the particles that are too small for your filter to filter out, making it easier to filter. People jumped all over me here, saying that i was stupid for using that, and how i can expect my fish to die.

Sorry to hear that.:(
I think it's important to get down to the root cause of a problem and not use chemicals as a band-aid. In your example I would have been inclined to examine the reasons why your tank was cloudy, or in this threads instance why the poster's water turned green, rather than attack!
I don't think any of the posts in this thread are negative, btw.

The world is full of chemicals. Water is a chemical. Chemicals rule. Algae destroyer is a chemical coctail that is deadly to algae (and, probably, plants). Is it BAD for fish? Eh, maybe. It MAY cause cancer (heck, red meat causes cancer). Some people don't take asprin for pain because it is "bad" for thier liver. Opinions vary on how "bad" asprin is, and how "bad" algae destroyer is.

Opinions vary less about doing water changes, reducing feedings and keeping the light off on a tank as not "bad" for the fish. Many would suggest it is "better" for the fish to do this than use algaecide. "Better" is subjective, you may think it is "better" to have instant results with a slight chance of negative health effects for the fish.

I would not use algaecides. Maybe that's just because I'm a cheap bastard and it's free to feed less, do water changes and turn off the light.

If my water turns green, generally a w/c and filter maintenance gets rid of it STAT.

I never said it was bad for the fish but very few things in life that can eradicate something living in a matter of hours turn out to be healthy for other living things in the area.

Ever heard of DDT?

"This stuff kills mosquitoes!"
"Hey lets spray it behind a truck everywhere we can!"
20 years later
"Oh this stuff causes cancer..."

you have way too much light on him anyways they dont like a lot of light... cut it down to about 6-8 hours tops thats all they need to produce vitamin d .... hes very nice you must feed him well.. good luck with your reprocussions ... i never treat nest time go with a blackout and scrub everything let the fileter and water changes clear it up for you... chemicals are always bad would you drink water with taste good chemicals??? o wait we do lol but yea natural is always better
