So I have a planted bichir tank that is starting to get a build up of algae on my plants and rock tube. I want to get something that would eat that algae, I was thinking of some flying foxes for they have done well in my community planted tank. How would you think they would do in the bichir tank, or would they just become a nice snack? Any other suggestions for an algae eater?

Allot of people do not recommend bichirs with plecos as they sometimes suck the slime coat from them.

An LFS by me has oto cats in with bichirs and they say they don't bother going for them. Then again, it is an lfs and they do replenish stock quite a bit..

I believe those are similiar to the flying foxes, just dont get as big. Guess I will give the flying foxes a shoot, hopefully I can find some more full grown ones so the bichirs wont be as tempted to gulp them up :D

The ones I have now are about 2 inches and they dont even bother the baby guppies so I dont imagine them picking on the bichirs. Im surey koliba would just eat them if they try :)

Flying foxes don't do a great job on algae once they grow larger, they become lazy IME and start eating the fish food lol

Oto cats aren't really similar to FF, they're more specialised clean up fish IMO, best algae eaters out there for larger leafed plants.

Whats with these fish getting lazy :D makes since though for the little ones I have come up with all the other fish in my other tank.

I will look out for those otos and give them a shot, thanks for the tip

No problem.
Just a note, otos can be a bit pricey and they're small so if you've got bichirs that feel the need to eat ASAP they'll probably catch them.

Siamese algae eaters always worked for me. But as they get older the occasionally develop a taste for slime coat
