Algae eater for bichir tank

Try a adult ancistrus like a budget nose or medusa. The get about 4" big. I haven't heard of them eating slime coat.

I have a flagtail, but they get big. Some people say they will suck the slime but that hasn't been a problem for me - yet.

Yeah that's not true for ancistris. You would be fine with a ancistris. A Common pleco would be a huge mistake.
