I have a 115 gallon aquarium with 2 JDs and 2 firemouths. The JDs are 1.5 inches but I tried to pick what looked like females and the firemouths are about 4 inches and are NOT a breeding pair. Once the JDs approach full size I may just move a firemouth or 2 back into my 29, but for now I want to know what kind of algae eater can tolerate harassment/not become food. I don't mind having to clean crap, I just don't want too much algae on the glass and rocks.

Zebra snails work great for me.

well you cant just depend on *algea eater* ( pleco ) to just eat algea. most if not all the plecos wont just relie on algea. you gotta feed them other food like algea wafer or some stuff like that.

Bristlenose Plecos only get about 5 inches long, and do a great job eating algae. They will be most likely do fine with JDs and FMs

I was thinking BN because they do a much better job than the larger species, but won't the JDs eventually get big enough to eat them?

I dont have any personal expierence keeping the two together, so i am not positive. I have kept a JD with a common pleco, and the JD left him alone.

I would think with the JDs you have being small, if you buy around 2" BNs, and the the JDs get used to the BNs, by the time the JDs are big enough to eat them, the JDs will be accustom to them. Also give the BNs some driftwood that they can hide under/behind

I am sure someone has tried this and will share some info

the sooner you put them in the tank the better. you have a better chance of them enjoying each others company if they grow up together.

How many snails should I get for a 115g aquarium? Don't you have problems with keeping them from reproducing if you have more than one?

That snail idea is interesting, any idea where one would find them. I used to have small (no bigger than a plastic pin-head) gray snails that bred like rabbits but they just came with the plants I bought. Bought a festivum, that got rid of all of those guys.

As for the JD 'eating' the bristlenose, I doubt that would ever happen, they just are not that predatory compared in the grand scheme of things, plus few fish in general would want to eat such a bony meal. If you raise them up with the pleco and give it hiding spots all will be fine.
