i didnt mean chinese algae eaters i ment like the sieamese algae eaters siamese algae eaters, but ive never kept them so i guess they may be as aggressive as chinese algae eaters thanks for pointing that out
well, here is my $0.02: I have kept
true Siamese algae eaters (c
rossocheilus siamensis) in my planted tanks for years, and they have
never shown even a hint of aggressive behavior, I was really surprised to read that.
I keep them in schools of 5-9 fish (depending on fish size and tank size), I've kept them with dwarf cichlids and never seen them do any harm, and I've kept them with aggressive cichlids and marvelled at their ability to not get eaten
I never kept Chinese algae eaters because of the warnings that they get large and aggressive. I think it's possible the earlier poster who said he had aggressive SAEs may have actually had the
false SAE, which looks just like the true SAE and is often sold under that name, or under the name "Flying Fox"
here is a link to what I think is the best article I've ever seen explaining the differences:

also, I would note that I'm a big fan of bulldog plecos (as well as otocinclus) in the planted tank; I think bulldogs do a better job of cleaning the glass walls of the tank, while otos are excellent for cleaning plants
hope some of that helps . . .
