I have noticed that I am starting to get a lot of algae on my plants only. I have a community tank and I have put snails and a pleco in the tank thinking this would control the algae. Well they are keeping it off the glass and driftwood but not the plants. What would be the best thing to put in the tank that won't go after my other fish, snails, shrimp and won't destroy my plants?????

Nerite snails! The freshwater species are kind of hard to find locally (for me anyway), but they're awesome for getting algae off plants and places fish/larger snails cant reach. I have some in all my tanks. They can't breed in fresh water, so you don't have to worry about swarms of them taking over.

What kind of algae is on the plants? (is it just a slimey/fuzzy coating or is it long and hairlike?)

It is definitely best to try to fix the cause, but sometimes when it's something like too much light, it's hard to get rid of it without having a really short light cycle, which means less fish viewing time. Make sure you aren't over feeding and are vacuuming all the waste/leftovers regularly, that's usually what's happening when there's algae in the tank.

I have 3 nerite snails already and they do a great job but they don't really go on the plants. The algae is dark and hair like. It might be lighting since I just bought new lights 2 weeks ago and this is a very new problem.

Well I went to LFS and they only had 1 so I bought it and I plan to get a few more on Wednesday when they get more in.
I think the algae is from my new lights. They were bought for my 90g tank but it's not up and running yet so I put it on my 55g.
