ALGAE EXPLOSION

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
since you're being assaulted with a variety of advice, I'll add my $0.02 . . . I've controlled hair algae with just a very few added fish, specifically Siamese Algae Eaters (SAEs) . . .

plecos don't do squat for hair algae, though some snails might help . . . and while I do agree with Lupin that adding to the bio-load is potentially a bad idea, a small school of SAEs (4-6) would have minimal impact in your tank

you don't need "A LOT" of fish to control this problem, and besides, eventually the problem would be solved, and you'd have all those now un-necessary fish in your tank

Whats the average size of a SAE? if they are smaller or similar in size then a feeder they wont make it

so they can reach 6" or so I read Ill have to look for some

it is a legitimate risk, true . . . I've kept them with medium-to-large cichlids (JDs, GTs, Texas, etc.) without loss, but no guarantees . . .

If I can find one thats a decent size Im all about it but Im growing an OI and dat out in here and all they love is live food so didnt want him to be lunch

will redline sharks eat hair algae?

I sort of blame the oscars.... I had a tank do that to me while I was gone for a few days, and I happen to have oscars.

I've had 55 gallons with lights 24/7 365 and grew a little bit but always cleaned up once a week.

Oscars are very messy eaters.

yeah they are pigs but I have a pretty big clean up crew for him and he wasnt eating while I was away but Im sure he played a pretty big part

Its weakening but not dieing just falling off and making more of a mess. Its killing my filter I have to clean the intake twice a day, its actually damaged my impeller which it making a terrible noise now

If by "redline shark" your referring to Puntius Denisonii (redline torpedo barb)??? If so no, they will not eat algae. They are beautiful and gettting really expensive.
