Algae: Friend or Foe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I leave it unless it's on the front side(where I look in), if it's on the side IDC, it's not like i'm going to be looking through the side to see my fish. I also had fry that will much on it at times, plus plecs will eat it, unless you have one of them lazy ones that do nothing(me, me, me!!!!!!!). :)

Depending on the setup I am planning, algae can be unsightly. I do not mind it in a river setup for loaches but I hate its looks in a goldfish tank but it'll grow on me I am sure.

I also think it depends on the fish, I mean if you have some albino or these platinum fishes, then some green algae will make your tank look like crap. Or an orange goldfish. :)

I keep it off the front glass, and otherwise I don't care. In my 75, the flagtail keeps the algae pretty well under control

I've even had some pretty cool formations develop in my tanks:

What the...

It looks like a frog whos skin is blistering off...

That tank was set up a few years ago. I don't have a full tank shot anymore. That pic is just the tip of a piece of driftwood that stuck out of the water. It bubbled up like that because it was right under the lights and produced tons of oxygen

What you need is an algae farm. Set up a tank or tub with some powerful lights left on 24/7; drop in some stones, seed it with the kind of algae you want, and fertilize occasionally (old tank water is great for macronutrients, and slow-release houseplant sticks take care of the micronutrients). You'll get all the algae you can handle.
