I am new to the community, and I was wondering if someone could possibly help me with a severe algae issue I have in my tank. I've had Large aquariums for about 10 years now, but I usually keep South Americans, and I had a large Gold Shark for 6 years. Sad day when he died. I've also kept Salt water, and now I am venturing into the planted tank world and I have a custom 240 gallon tank that has been set up for about 3 months now. It's 4'x4'x2' with a center overflow. I currently have 4 - 14k 150w HQI metal Hallides, and a 30g tank where I keep the bioballs, carbon, heater and pumps. My poly is in my overflow. I am using Flourite for my substrate and have +6". I also have two pieces of driftwood in there.

It's a beautiful tank... after I clean it. but within a week this bright green algae takes over... and I mean TAKES over. My wood is green, my red flourite is green, my acrylic is green where I can't reach with the mag-float. And Heaven forbid I don't use that mag-float every other day.

What is possibly out of balance? What shoudl I change? And will it ever go away? Thank you so much for your help.

I leave my lights on from 9-6. and using just the basic flourish liquid once a week.

Are you running Co2?

I did'nt think of that :) 9 hrs may be to long on that much lighting. Like I said, there is a wealth of info on here.

no.

No on the CO2... computer a bit slow. Also, on the description of the algae... it might be a hair, it's a little fuzzy, but my gouramis keep it groomed. They are always grazing on it.

It's not near a window, and the closest window has black out curtains on it. I didn't think to check my phosphates. if they are high what can I do to drop them?

You can buy a phosphate remover. I would first check to see if your ferts contain phosphate. You might be overdosing and not know it.
