I meant why stop after 8 hours?

Because it was clean?:D
Seriously, 8 hours, 10 hours, 24 hours? I doubt it matters. I'm a bit old school (OK, by MFK standards i'm probably all the way old school) and running a diatom too often can actually kill off bene bacteria and when removed, the tank can potentially cycle again. At least that's what I heard when I was 12.

it matters because your green water wont return. and your beneficial bacteria is not in your water column. this is a myth. the beneficial bacteria doesnt float around in your tank. it's in your filters, in the filter media, on your plants, substrate, etc. it's anchored to something. a diatom filter (and a UV light for that matter) is not going to affect your beneficial bacteria.

Yeah, if your water was clean, then the green water wouldn't return, but it is returning... A few days of diatom + a true black out will surely eliminate the GW.

i would still say phone up your water company im sure you are entitled to a report on the levels of chemicals in your drinking water. if you have bad water then your trying to filter a fertilized tank with no plants.
no matter how much you spend on filters the problem will keep coming back

yeah, everything point to somethign in his water. most water reports are available online for your area, check your cities website

My water dept sends reports quarterly so that's not a problem. What is a problem is reading it; every chemical they test for will be within what they consider "Spec" so it will be inconclusive. I have a 125 turtle tank 10 feet from my 72 that doesn't even turn brown, let alone green.

Good points on the diatom so here's what I will do: I'll run it for several days and black the tank out. I'll report back with the results. i'll also clean both filters so we're starting fresh.

Ok I'l try one more time then give up. Does your tank have a strong earthy pungent smell either the water or the filter media? It is possable to have green water and cyano eliminating one with out the other will not solve your problem. Blacking out your tank for a couple of days will do nothing. Maybe if you blacked it out for two weeks that would do it. Do a 50% wc and kill it with tetracycalene. Keep the filters running all except the diatom, without carbon which you shouldn't use anyway, if you are. If your problem was simply green water with everything you've done so far it would be gone by now. Then do what I said in my other post. I realize you don't know who I am but from the pic you posted and your dicription of your problem it sounds like cyano.

No UV either if you use The tetracycalene

I read every post, but didn't reply to each one. I already mentioned I think the cyano theory is interesting and I meant it. Another poster suggested treating with EM, you suggest TC, so there is a conflict I need to consider and do some more research.
I appreciate your post; don't give up.
To answer your question: No, I do not notice any particular foul odor. Smells like the garden variety filter smell to me. Right now, the tank is clear so I can't get an accurate smell anyway.

If this is cyano, why isn't the diatom getting rid of it?
I do not want to black out the tank for weeks on end. Frankly, I think this is bad for the fish.

Sorry, my error erethromyacin is needed. The diatom filter will only remove what passes through it, Cayano attaches to surfaces. No keeping the tank dark for weeks is not an option I was just making a point. Kill the bacteria and I'll bet your problem will go away. I fought this same thing years ago and only got rid of the prob once I used the antibiotic.
