so i got my new bichir, love them already, but im having my algae pop up since i gave away my pleco. i have brown algae on the glass, and im finding hair algae on my driftwood (its always clear, but you can see them waving). is this a nitrate issue? what should i do to correct it?

i debated with the gurus on this forum, and they r against plecos mixed with bichir, and i dont want to take that chance.

Ya its hit or miss i think i got a hit. I had my pleco before the bichirs. He doesnt even pay them much attention. He is to busy eating algae or veggie disc.

sooooo what should i do about this algae then? tablets? water changes? r nitrates the cause? i also have my lighting timer set to 7 hours daily. is that too much?

Try apple snails, I am keeping them with my bichir, They do a good job in cleaning algae and any left overs if the Bichir may leave any.

I'm sooo glad you asked this! I've been using rubber nose and roseline sharks to control the algae (hair and brown) in my 80 gal tetra tank, but have been dying to put our flowerhorn in this tank. The only reason I haven't is the fear of that hair algae taking over.

Can't wait to see what you decide to do, and how it turns out.

im going to try the upped water changes route. but my water does contain phosphates, which doesnt help. we dont have the best water where we live.

Normally you can leave algae and it'll go away eventually...

If not you can try adding more plants, less lighting , less feeding
