That's actually the exact one I picked up from petsmart. Got great reviews for the most part and was nice and cheap so it won't break the bank even if it doesn't work.

thats where i got mine aswell i did a water change a mointh after i got it and the light wouldnt turn back on they next day aired a replacment.
i had it plugged in my 75 of 5 days than did a 50% water change 2 days in a row and i have crystal clear water ever since..

Alright I'm gonna give this Tetracyclenea try and I'll update at a later date. Thanks a bunch Tom! :)

Hey man if you do decide to use the Tetracyclene, be aware that this stuff causes MASSIVE foam on the water surface if there is excessive aggitation. In the mechanical chamber of my sump, the foam got so thick it lifted the lid & hose clean off the wet/dry tower and caused an awful mess.. GL man.. :D

Jesus Christ that's a lot of foam!

But yeah I'm gonna hold off on that until I try out the UV Sterilizer for a few days. Thanks for the heads up though man.

Yeah no worries! :D

ps - I ran a 40watt UV on my 125g in the dining room for over a year and battled cyanobacteria the entire time. Hopfully works better for you than it did me. I got no results with UV. Maybe I did get results and it would have been worse without the UV, no way to tell for sure. Keep us posted and WELCOME to MFK!

Yeah I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed.

Already took my "before" photo and gonna snap one everyday for the next 5 days or so. Not even too sure this is cyanobacteria but whatever it is, I want it gone!

And thanks man, I've been reading different threads for a few months now so I decided it was time to start posting myself ;)

I had a cynobacteria problem as well. Forgot which meds i used but on the box it stated a cynobacteria treatment.

Before treatment I removed as much of the bacteria as i could by stiring up the gravel, scraping the glass, using a soft brush on my driftwood and vaccuming it out.

Massive water change, added meds and turned off the lights for a week.

Then another water change and filter media rinse. been years since a cynobacteria
outbreak...GL

I do have a strange grassy looking algae growing on my driftwood but my 2 Adonis plecos and 2 siamesis are
keeping it in check. Looks kinda cool so im not going to treat it

Try a rhino pleco these things seem to like anything that looks like algae and cheaper than a uv sterilizer. Also in order to kill it the organism has to pass through the sterilizer.

"Stringy" isn't a word I'd used to describe Cyanobacteria, it would a word I'd use when describing numerous strains of Algae, Beard,Hair,Silk, and Stag algaes to name a few. In my tanks Cyanobacteria as black, it grows on large river rocks and orniments and has yet to become invassive as most of my fish will graze on it including my Jags, fancey plecos, and cats. Supirulina is a form of Cyanobacteria. This bacteria is not always black could be red or blue-green and I view it as benificial. This stuff was/is the building blocks of life billions of years ago. Algae is a whole other story, it's probably best to have these things ID'ed before throwing meds into the water. With no pics posted for proper ID this whole thread is a guess and treating a guess with meds is just plain reckless. There are tons of sites including this one that visually will help you ID your issues, once that has been done you can correct it, other than that it's all BS.

Just an update...I've been running this UV Sterilizer for 2 days now and the water is definitely clearing up. I'm gonna scrape whatever this bacteria/algae is off the glass again tomorrow and hope to never see it again.

Thanks for the help everybody, I'll let you know how it goes in a week or so.
