I've been experiencing some problems with algae. I've never had any algae before so this is a new battle for me. I've tried feeding less and I've been doing 20% water changes almost daily which has helped. I do know what type of algae this is or how to get rid of it. I hope the attached pictures can help you help me.

Tank cycled?

If so what's your lighting like? Usually a problem of to much lighting and not enough co2. Without injected co2 you cant even use med/high lighting. So try changing the cycle to less hours or if its a multiple florescent try taking a bulb out.

Or it may not even be the right spectrum bulb. 6-7000k is the correct color temperature.

I found a 2h break in lighting mid-day helps against algae. Double dose flourish excel as safe algicide to start with a clean tank. Or black it out for 3 days (lights off, blanket over tank). Best, get a couple dozen Otocinclus.

I just upgraded to a finnex planted plus light, but the problem was there prior to upgrading the light (used to be an old single tube t8). I just purchased flourish excell and am going to see what happens. Also my nitrates are at 0 and nitrites are 0. The tank is fully cycled being almost 7 years old. Is there a fish that will eat this algae?

Ill try that two hour break for sure along with hunting down some otos.
Thanks for the helpful responses!

Is the length of the lite the same as the tank? How many Watts? Is it sitting on the rim or suspended above?

The light is the same length (36") as the tank and is slightly elevated above the tank (on those little legs) its an led so I don't know the wattage off the top of my head. I believe it's the same as a two bulb t-5 ho

If its the equivalent as 2 T5-HO's then not having some source of carbon is most likely your problem, since you are starting to venture into high light territory from a low light one...

Quick update: I started dosing flourish excell asap and did the double dose to start it off and then dose per instructions. Couple days later, algea is almost completely gone.
Thanks for the help guys!!
