okay, so I'll give you some background first. I received a 55 gallon tank about 4-5 years ago with all the stones decorations etc. It has been resealed once, and although its never leaked, it looked like crap. The last of the original fish died about 4 months ago, and i was given a bunch of cichlids. After a ton of research online, I've decided to make a 3d background with styrofoam / concrete. So I moved everything into an empty 55 gallon tank I've had including all the gravel decorations and filters so I could clean and reseal the other tank before making the background for it. So now the entire setup was moved into the shop for a week or so while I've been working on the old one, and although I haven't changed a thing, I'm getting tons of algae everywhere. The light the tank is getting is even less than what it was before too, so Im at a loss. Ive added a HOB filter in the meantime to add in water flow and the filters were completely clogged after only 24hours. The canister filter wasn't too bad, but it didn't seem to have the flow capable of keeping up with this on its own. The algae is very fine, whispy, and hard to see in the pic. Everything always had algae on it, but nothing like this! It reminds me of cotton candy. How can I get rid of this or stop it from getting out of hand? I don't really want the problem to transfer back over to the other tank once the background is all done. Ive looked at hundreds of pics of algae, and I didn't see anything that matches perfectly. Ive also noticed small white specks on some of the decorations. All the fish are perfectly healthy though, and no signs of ick or anything.
Below is a pic of the algae.....the white spots in the water are bubbles, not the white spots I was talking about.

Nope, its in my shop, which does have a window, but the tank is actually under the counter because I didn't trust the weight of it on top of the counter. (I didn't expect 600+lbs to sit on top of it) The blinds have actually been closed since the summer so its just very filtered indirect sunlight coming into the room. They are just cheap white pvc horizontal blinds so no one can see all the tools in there if they looked. If anything, its getting way less light than where it was.

Ive just checked the PH and ammonia etc and everything is fine too. I thought maybe the tank went into a cycle even though I used all the same stuff, but it doesnt seem to have.

Nope, all the fishes are still alive and well. The algae is about 1/8" long and very fine. Its sways in the currents. The tiny white specs I mentioned arent fuzzy at all. Just very tiny white specs, only on the tops of things, like something fell into the tank, which I wouldnt be too surprised over. I havent tried cleaning any of the decorations, I've just been keeping an eye on it the past week. Nothing seems to be getting worse, just kinda holding. There isnt any more white specs than the first time I noticed it, and they havent grown in size. The only annoying thing is the algae, which covers everything including the glass. I just never had this problem with algae until everything was moved to the new tank.

Well, after a couple scary days where the algae really got out of hand, covering every available surface in the annoying green stuff, I can say its finally under control again. I left the lights off completely and the algae got REALLY bad on Monday. Surprisingly though, when I went to feed the fish on Tuesday, almost all the algae was gone. Im still not really sure what brought it all on, but a couple days of no lights had cured it. Yesterday and today I've had the lights back on for about 4 hours, and so far so good. I think I'll steadily bump the lights up a half hour at a time until the algae starts to return so I can find the happy medium. I do however have a question though. I have 3 small bristlenose plecos that I have in a 20gallon fry tank right now, and I'd love to put one or two in the 55gallon with the algae, but I'm afraid they'll be eaten by morning. They are about 2 inches long at most, and the cichlids in the 55 gallon are about 3-4 inches. What are the chances that the bristlenose will live if they get put in there? Theres plenty of places to hide, however all the places are big enough for the cichlids to get into as well. Any thoughts?
