I am new- got my RSM 650 back in May. I have an algae problem and I'd like to see if anyone can help me positively id the algae so that I can properly treat it. My air was out for two weeks- tank got hot- did everything I could to keep it cool, including ice cubes in the sump. This was a nightmare- tank was gross. I think I ended up with diatoms and algae because the nasty brown slime on the sand ended up going away, but I am left with this algae.

LFS was out and suggested it was dinos. I'm not so sure- and frankly neither were they. We blacked out for three days then scrubbed the rocks as best we could but there is still algae.

By the way, I have fish and live rocks, two anemones and a cup coral.

See pics as attachments. Suggestions appreciated.

I've found the best remedy is to let it run it's coarse. I have two reef tanks and a fowlr set up and have had issues with heat and algae. I do not recommend treatment other than natural algae eaters...lawnmower blennies do great work but you get stuck feeding them craploads of seaweed sheets after they do their job. Patience is probably the best solution. Sucks tho waiting for your beautiful reef to come back!

Those tanks have been running a long time. Never used any algae treatment ever. There have been a couple times I've been in a panic because algae and cyanobacteria have bloomed up and taken over. They always run their coarse and now I don't ever have algae. It seems once the coralline algae takes hold, other green and brown algae can't grow anymore. Be patient

TBH I really wanted those green algae for my FOWL tank so it can look a bit more nature lol but due to vodka dosing I got none :P

A good way to prevent algae is to have an algae scrubber. Funny, I know, but the algae in the scrubber will consume most of the nutrients, and prevent the growth of algae elsewhere.

I'll need more info on the tank to make an assessment of what's causing the algae and how to get rid of it, what fish are currently housed? Are you using ro water? What substrate do you have? You said you got the tank back in May so you might experience some algae blooms to a newly established aquarium. It's only 3 or 4 months old and that's very common. There are some ways to keep it under control. I set my 120 reef up two years ago and hadn't gotten any algae cycles in the tank except coralline.

Looks like hair algae. Get a CUC with snails and hermit crabs to tackle it before it gets out of control.
