I just bought some Live Rocks tonight at a really cheap price of #4/kg of any guy who's taking apart his tank. The only price to pay for this, is that its covered in this green/brown hair algae.....heaps of it! The guy who had the tank before took out all the fish, but kept on feeding the corals, so he had this massive algae growth.

What can I do to get rid of it? Will my fish eat it? I've only got 2 small Dominos in there at the moment.

Turbo snails will eat hair algae. Also make sure your phosphates are really low and turn your protein skimmer up alittle and skim wet that will help pull alot of nutrients out of the water that hairalgae will feed on.

Thanks sprayin70! I don;t have a phosphate test kit which would mean I'll probably have to get one. Will these snails breed like the ones you get in freshwater? I don't want to solve one investation and result in another one!

No generally they won't. Snail breeding in Saltwater is generally a good thing. LOL.

I dont think snails will be able to eat it at that length. they generally trim it before it gets that long. Just dont worry about it. It should settle down within a few weeks. Just make sure the first fish you get is an algae eater.
Even reefs in the wild have algae so not a problem unless it gos crazy.

Sea Hares are great I had one for a while. The thing is you will need to get rid of them after the algae is gone or they will starve to death. they rarely eat Nori or any other food offered.

Cool thanks guys!

I tried ripping them out already, but after the first 2 rocks, i gave up. Generally I'm not too worried about it because I know they actually dohelp keep the water cleaner, but it just looks ugly! I'm thinking if they're not gone in a month or 2, i'll just chuck them in the refugium and get some new ones, cause right now my refugium is empty.

I might look into some snails, and possibly just rip them out, but while they eventually go away?

I'm gonna get some tangs next, and as far as I remember, they do like some vegies too right?

Get some snails anyway. I didnt mean to say dont get them at all. They may not eat whats already there but they will stop more from growing.
And yes tangs will take care of the rest.
