Algae problems and filter questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started growing Devil's Ivy (marble queen & std Pothos) in all my FW tanks this year. This is because my nitrates are 20ppm from the tap, and this keeps it under control. I am not botanist, but I think that the ivy takes out every mineral and nutrient it needs from the tankwater.

This reduces the nutrition available for algae, and all my algae problems died off. Green algae, blue algae, brown algae, pokadot plaid paisley algae . . .all gone now. I tried lots of aquatic plants, but pothos works and grows 10x better. I think some fish are nibbling on the roots, but after many months, nothing has died except algae.

Maybe I’ll try the pothos out too... I just did a 50% water change now, have it I’m the calendar. Will do as mentioned, 50 weekly for now until I see it slowing down or becoming stable

I would also recommend keeping the lights off at all times unless you’re viewing the tank. I have a heavily stocked 220 and it has zero algae because the lights are off at all times except for a few minutes when I feed and if I decide to site and watch it for a while.
