Algae solutions other than uv filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for all of the responses!
I would like some shade for the pond, but wind is an issue :nilly:
Pond plants will probably be the only shading I will be able to use

Try increasing the shade and filtering by putting lilly pads in there. Take all of the dirt out from around the roots and plant them in some pots with some clean gravel. I would buy a small uv light like an 8 watt that runs around $160. If you can't, be patient. Let the pond mature.

So, will the barley extract drops help just as much as the barley straw itself?

I use both. I have used the liquid barley extract for 2 years yet I did get string algae. This year I started using the barley straw pads and within 2 weeks all string algae was gone and there is far less green algae on the walls of the pond and the water is clearer.

I think right now I will be patient. I do know a guy who has tons of plants that he will give me....so that should help.

Can I just clear something up. String algae as you call it is not algae it is blanket weed. Barley extracts and other similar things do not do anything for algae aka green water they target blanket weed and use up the nutrients that it grow on.

It's not that great for removal of blanket weed either more as a proactive approach to stopping it growing.

If you want no UV as stated above the best solution is plants, if you want plants that remove blanket weed then you need water hyacinth, and lots of them.

Use beneficial bacteria and it will be gone BOOM! SHABANG! Just invest in a uv light it will save you much headaches. Just turn it on when algea comes and turn it off when its gonna. GOOD GAME ALGEA

Sorry, but I don't get where BB comes into it, UV light does not kill green algae, it makes it form into clumps so your filter can remove it, your thinking of a uv sterilizer ?

A UV sterilizer will work, I put one on my pond 3 weeks ago and it went from pea soup to "crispy" in less than 2 weeks. My plants are starting to grow so I will unplug it when they get some growth to them and let them do the job till fall.
