it is all about water parameters.

this is my option. i will NEVER do a salt tank without a refugium. the nitrates in my tank wont even register on my test kit.

ok, 1 down... Have you tested phosphates?

You don't need a fuge. I don't have one. They're good for a population of pods (if you have fish to eat them) and for getting rid of some nitrates (but you're already at 0, so not really an issue). How old is your test kit? What brand?

geronimo. im not the 1 having problems. cichlid is.

besides that all i was saying is i think a fuge cuts down on waterchanges drasticly.

Sorry, i was just adding to what you're saying and hopefully the OP is reading...

How does it cut down on water changes? It doesn't produce any trace minerals that are found in new saltwater after a water change. Just curious, let me know what you think.

A fuge will consume both phosphates and nitrates. Its all about having a good protien skimmer and a good fuge. If you can have both, you wont have to do much in the way of water changes... especially on a FOWLR.

I agree with the consumption part, but cut back on water changes? They should be done once a week, minimum, in my opinion. Fish only or reef tank. What about all the trace minerals that are found in the new water (from the salt mixture of course), the stuff we can't test? I guess you won't care unless you have corals...

i think it depends on how u are dosing calcium and alkalinity. lots of your supplements will add all the trace elements u need.

and correct me if im wrong. a calcium reactor, what i use, doses most trace elements also.

Ahh, I think you're right. I don't dose anything. I just keep my weekly water changes on schedule. When I upgrade to my 125 in wall (gotta build my house first lol) i am going to run a calcium reactor.

wow that was amazingly civil

u dont dose anything? how do u maintain alk? i guess a fowlr wouldnt eat much alk.

i know when i was manually dosing if i skipped a day my alk would drop 1dkh.
