You'll get less algae with live plants because, typically, the live plants will out-compete the algae for food. Like Frostyone said, sunlight will give you algae faster than you can imagine haha, you might have weak lighting or old bulbs?
 
Lol my tank not next to the window and it gets lil bits on sun light depending if the blinds are open
 
I think old bulbs i am getting new one this weekend as well with some new plants..

Algae is the nearest thing to their natural food you can give an mbuna. I never clean my rocks. Will look at cleaning the glass, all round, from time to time. I have found that a blue marine tube helps to promote the growth, especially when left on 24hrs a day.
 
how do you fish react to that amount of light? Do you have the blue on all day and night plus another light for day light? Just curious to try something with an extra blue light I have
