Chinese algea eaters. Snails also eat algea but I don't know if you want snails in your tank.

the common pleco could probably survive in the coldwater. chinese algae eaters would be a good choice though

As far as I know, algea eaters only get two or three inches long. And I've never heard of them becoming carnivores and killing all the rest of your fish.

Well Siamese algae eaters are pretty good. also known as SAE's or siamensis. Not sure if thats what you guys are meaning by chinese algae eaters.

Otocinclus or also known as Dwarf suckermouth catfishes do a pretty good job. They stay small and do a pretty good job at cleanup.

Not sure about how the goldfish would treat them but Amano Shrimp also known as Algae eating shrimp do a pretty good job too. And they look cool on top of it.

And finally a Bristelnose pleco...stays small 4-5" and does a good job at cleaning also...mine never stops.

I have all of the above in my tank and they make a hell of a clean up crew. :)

I have never had a problem with either siamese or chinese algae eaters, most plecos and otocinclus will slowly die at lower temps due to digestion problems but if you are talking mid 70s they should be okay, there are also several cool water natives like stonerollers that work.

are the siamese the ones with a common name "flying fox" or am i thinking of something different?

Flying foxes are not algae eaters. although they almost look identical to the siamensis they are more aggresive and do not eat algae.
