mine are stuck between the top of my HOB filters and grow down into the back chamber from there so I can still access everything I need. I use cuttings from potted plants, and once they develop a decent root growth I trim it away enough to remove it from the top and from there just hang it in the back of my tanks. some people just directly hang them in the tank to begin with. But it will attach itself with roots to media ect. but not very well unless left undisturbed for a long time.
