I am starting to get algae on my tank sides. It's the green stuff.Very hard to scrape off of acrylic.I read that algae needs phosphate to grow.If I put a phosphate remover pad in my filter would that do the trick?

you may have to use ro/di water. your houise water or tank fill water may have phosphates.

I plan on adding plants. I know that the plants will use up the available light and nutrients. Does anyone know what is a good method to remove the stuff from the acrylic? With my glass tank I just used a metal scraper. This will ruin my acrylic. Also I noticed that it grows most at the lower half of the tank. I would think that it would grow more at the top. Where it is closer to the light.

So a phosphate remover would be a good idea? I guess I should invest in a good test kit. I have had a 125 for 20+ years and never tested or heated the water. Never had any trouble with what ever I had in the tank. This bigger tank has been giving me a lot of new lessons.

#1 way of getting rid of algae? reduce light. Try to eliminate natural lighting as much as possible and try to only keep the lights on your tank when you are viewing the fish. A timer is a great way of regulating the time your overhead lights are on. Adding live plants will out compete alage as well.
