Alge problem

Then if you could eliminate iron from the FW unplanted aquarium alga would not grow?

This is interesting as I understand... phosphorus,nitrogen,carbon and silicon are the major nutrients and calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and sulfur are the secondary. Never though a trace element would be so important to algal growth. :)

The primary four nutrients are NPK and carbon, generally in the form of CO2. Calcium does not affect the growth of plants save for a select few. Silicone has no affect, but silicates do. However, alga do not have the same needs as most plants, and are opportunistic growers. Many can survive exclusively on iron.
