Then if you could eliminate iron from the FW unplanted aquarium alga would not grow?

This is interesting as I understand... phosphorus,nitrogen,carbon and silicon are the major nutrients and calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and sulfur are the secondary. Never though a trace element would be so important to algal growth.

The primary four nutrients are NPK and carbon, generally in the form of CO2. Calcium does not affect the growth of plants save for a select few. Silicone has no affect, but silicates do. However, alga do not have the same needs as most plants, and are opportunistic growers. Many can survive exclusively on iron.
