All female tanks

Seen it done you just have to be careful when they lay eggs some females aggression can be just as bad as the males then.
In a large enough tank though think this would be an issue? Say 5 or 6 female salvini in a 125?

Don't hold your breath haha this was more a hypothetical question. I won't be setting up any new tanks for a while.

I think there is no real definitive answer to this question. In most cases I think it's safe to say you will get less trouble from females than the majority of males. However, how peacefully a group of females will react with each other in a group situation depends on the characteristics and breeding strategy of its particular species.
To generalise though, female groups are a more peaceful tank option and 5 female salvini in a 125 is likely to be a workable outcome.
I have also had females that have been more aggressive than their own mate, so I think each situation can vary and the outcome not always predictable.

I know nothing is set in stone when it comes to cichlids but typical experiences are a good place to start.
I know it's not common since most people like to males but some female species are more attractive than makes species. And they stay smaller. And I won't be stuck with ten billion fry.

I know what you mean. Like female festea more than male for sure. Not exactly smaller fish though =P

Yeah I'm more interested in the little ones anyways. But female festae are a good example of super awesome looking females.

that is going to be a high maintenance tank

Clean out the filters every day
Rocks needs to be color coordinated
You would need to rearrange the decor every now and then
they would complain about the food, the sand, the plants etc...''

stick with males.... less issues. :)
Yes this is awesome just woke the wife up I was laughing so hard

Until recently I kept these in a 180, all females: Festae, RTM, 2x Cuban, Vieja Syn

They were all under 7" or so, I kept them together for 2 years. One of the Cubans got beat up at one point, and they did kill a salvini, and a male Thoricthys Maculipinnis.. I also had to rehome a loiselle(sp?) as it was getting beaten hard.

Most had slightly damaged finnage except the RTM. I pulled them all except the Syn, wanted to move to something less aggressive, replaced them with Pearsei now.

I should add... all the violence seemed to happen when the moon lighting was on... dunno what that's all about.. all lights off or on and things were ok.

For some species such as salvini and nics, it makes sense to keep females only because females are more colorful than male. I once kept two female nics in one tank and they wouldn't tolerate each other and I had to separate them. 2 is a bad number though and if I kept 3 or more, they will likely do OK as the aggression is not targeted. I once kept all female GTs to separate from all male GTs to eliminate breeding aggression. The all male GT tank is always more aggressive than an all female tank. Female aggressiveness is different from male which tends to be constant and claim larger territory. Female aggressiveness tends to be episodic and localized as a single female will lay eggs or pare up with another female.
