Just to let you know if you REALLY have a a REAL Russian AK-47 that has been "converted" to semi only it IS ILLEGAL.
Post pics ASAP of the left side of the receiver and I can tell you if its legal or not.
The problem is, according the fools at the BATF, "once a machine gun always a machine guns." A "real" AKM (most likely you have an AKM and NOT an AK) will have whats called a "third pin hole" This hole is where the auto sear pin use to attach to the receiver. That hole will still be there if indeed your weapon was "converted" from full automatic to automatic fire. If that hole is there, your weapon is officially an unregistered machine gun and comes complete with a nice long stay at club fed if for any reason you are caught with it.
Now there are a couple possibilities that you indeed have a Russian that is legal. One, it is a Russian "saiga sporter rifle." These rifles are made in the world famous Izshmash (my Russian spelling is poor so bear with me) factory. Because there is a ban on the importation of military style weapons from Russia and China, the saigas are sporterized and come in the US lacking the ability to accept standard capacity double stack mags, they also lack a pistol grip and come with a monte carlo stock and of course are auto loading only. My saiga-12 is like this, but once the correct number of US parts are added (section 922r which is the DUMBEST LAW EVER) you can add a pistol grip and open up the magazine well to accept standard mags. So in a way you will end up with a "Russian" AKM-47 clone.
The second is you have a Russian gun that was demilled (receiver cut in half) and sent to the US as a parts kit. The parts kit are then built on an American made semi auto only receiver (no third hole) and again with the correct number of US made parts per 922r you will have a Russian AK on an American receiver. These guns are worth a good penny. For example, several years ago many PLO captured AKs and AKMs were demilled and sent to the US. These kits had a hard time selling for jsut a couple hundred dollars. Today these KITS...not even complete guns....are selling for well over $1,000!!!
So please post up a pic including the left side and any aresenal markings on the rifle and myself or some one else can give you a little history on your rifle, heck, we may even prevent you form going to jail!
