Hi
I am planning on getting a larger tank for all male Haps tank. I can only fit 72” long tank through the door, so I believe I am limited to 180, 240 or 300 deep tanks.

180 is 72 x 24 x 24
240 is 72 x 24 x 30
300 is 72 x 36 x 27

I will be keeping some of the larger Haps like Fosso, Bucco Noto, Malawi Trout, etc around 25 fish.

Being the length of the 3 tanks are the same and 300 has more depth. Would it make too much different for these fish as to which tank I get besides the water volume? I can always get a bigger sump to get more water volume.

I know larger is always better but the price different is quite big, so wonder if each is significant better than the other.

Wish I can get the 96” tank but wouldn’t fit.

Thanks

Personally I like the lower tanks and do not believe extra width or height add significantly to the numbers of fish you can keep. I like 18 individuals for all male in a 72" tank but only if they mature <= six inches.

Hi DJ
Just so I understand correctly, so regardless if I have a 125, 150, 180, 240 or 300. As long as the length is 72” your recommendation is that same 18 individuals sized fish for all these tanks and if I want to get say 25 fish with some =>> 6 inch then I need a 96” or longer length of tank. So no Fosso, Bucco, Malawi Gar etc.. in any 72” tank?

Thanks

Maybe I should rephrase my question. If I want to keep 25 or so all male Haps , including some of the larger one like Bucco, Exo, Fosso, Dimi, Nimbo plus some of the smaller one. What is the minimum tank dimension I need to get? I was originally planning to get a 96" 300 but wouldn't fit through the door, so was hoping a 72" 300 deep will do, but if it wouldn't then I need to rethin2 tank my strategy. Either buy a smaller and split the stock into 2 all male tanks or look to pay someone to build a larger custom tank inside the house.

Thanks and sorry for all the questions. Wanted to make sure I get the right size tank to stock what I want and currently have.

I don't keep or like the big haps but I don't think many people who do (bar the youtubers) keep 25 males in a 72" tank. But maybe some Members here have done it with success and will report in.

If I were lured to the dark side for maybe a group of white lips I would keep fewer fish in the 72" tank. I would have to think about how many, and I would do mixed gender which allows more fish as well.

Tank size does matter, a 125 is not the same as the 300. The bigger the tank the more fish u can keep. If I was in ur shoes I would get the biggest tank u can. In ur case the 300. If u wanna go bigger. I kno u said 300 is the biggest. U can always go bigger and move it in thru the windows if u have a big window. I personally love wide tanks. it's more important in my opinion than the height of the tank.

Well my intention is to get something that can house all my current fish plus some and free up the current 125 to do a white specie only tank. It will obviously be mixed gender, that's why I need to figure out what tank I need to get so I don't wasted the money on something that doesn't;t work long term.

Thanks

LOL, trust me, I would go the biggest I can, 1000 - 2000 if I can get it into my house, but my windows is even smaller. The door would only allow 72" because there is a wall near the entrance. Anything bigger would require I knock down a wall, not gonna happen even I love fish.

I guess I will call couple custom aquarium service and see what they can do, maybe they can build a large tank inside the house, then I would go as big as I can afford, but I think if that is possible, it would be very expensive. I will check it out anyway.

Thanks

This may sound extremely silly but I think what I would do if I was looking to get multiple fish that grow over 10 inches is lay out on the floor in tape the front glass dimensions of the different tanks. Cut out of paper your ideal stock list full grown and place them within the confines of the taped area. While I know this won’t take depth in to consideration you can at least see how crowded the tank would look. I know djransome likes to stock lighter than me for a more natural looking tank while Cjaco stocks way more heavily than I like. I am not saying either is wrong but sometimes it comes down to your personal preference.

Wouldn't mix gender limit the fish? Everything I read is if there is female, the male gets super aggressive during spawn and one single fish can take up 2/3 of as 72" tank. Since there is no female in an all male tank, no aggression from spawning. Maybe I misunderstood, still learning. My first ever all male tank.
